Poetry

My ode to poetry
the non-rhyming, artsy-fartsy kind, but without arts and mostly just, well, farts:

Ding ding ding ding the music trolls through the neighborhood
Does she hear it?
Not yet.
It's time to decide.
Now. No time to wait.
Adult looks exchanged. Heads nodded. Only slightly.
Only slightly.
We scramble for $1.50

Then look at her. No words yet.
Eyes widen. Mouth opens. No sound.
Not yet.
Sound travels slow. Slower than light
Here it is
The sound

ICE...
CREAM...
TRUCK!

She pauses in between words
You can tell it's from the joy
Utter joy and excitement
As if no ice cream can Ever possibly be better than
That Costco crap for $1.50 that travels the streets

ICE...
CREAM...
TRUCK!

Hand in hand, Daddy and Daughter walk to the truck
Truck still singing
Calling all the other children over to our yard
She chooses
Yesterday it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Costco crap for $1.50 doesn't even look like a turtle

But the joy of it for us is hearing Daughter yell,
THANK YOU ICE CREAM TRUCK
GOODBYE ICE CREAM TRUCK
And not ever even noticing the man inside.

The Weekend Update (and more Signa-isms)

Saturday we went to dance class followed immediately by a birthday party. Marc was just as amazed at Signa as I was. She is just so fine with being in the class and away from us that it's stunning. She happily runs into the room (falling, because tap shoes are slippery) and happily stays there trying to learn and help others. Mostly help others. She was seen throughout the half hour running back for those who weren't frolicking across the room like they were supposed to, helping others stand when the teacher said to, and spinning girls around when it was the turn-yourself-around time in the hokey pokey. She is uber bossy and helpful. We'll have to work on that as soon as we stop laughing about it. We then went to her friend, Isabelle's, birthday party. Her party was at a park here in town. The kids played and the parents talked. It was a ton of fun and Isabelle and the others (one of the girl's parents were in Lamaze class with us) shock me with how big they are getting. I don't see them as often as Marc does, so it's just shocking. Rosalyn (our fellow Lamaze baby) even spelled out her own name on her goodie bag project. Amazing. They are KIDS, not babies. Now it's real. Yikes. On Sunday morning we went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In a giant theater. Awesome. Best movie in a very long time. The two parts I thought Signa might be frightened, I looked over and she was laughing. Way to go, Signa! Some other Signa-isms I forgot to write down: * Playing with her new doctor kit, she informed Kasey that her pancreas was now all better. * She informed the neighbor across the street that, "You have a bagina!" He is a boy. We still have work to do. * We Netflicked Lost in Space. She thinks the Robot says, "Good morning, Will Robinson." * There is a song, Time to Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. We have it on tape in the car. Signa calls it the "Elmo Song," Since they played it on Sesame Street one day with Elmo and his sister singing. * Marc wiped his face with a napkin and the napkin left little napkin lint all over. He looked in the mirror and said, "There is crap on my face!" Later in the day, Signa suddenly yells, "THERE IS CRAP ON MY FACE!" * At Pinecrest, looking at the large pine trees, I said, "What kind of trees do you think these are?" Without even pausing, Signa says, "Conifer trees."

Signa-isms

I've only been jotting down the Signa-isms, so all regular "what we did today" stuff is lost from my brain. Here you go, though:

We went to story time at the library and between stories they sing songs. They were doing Old MacDonald Had a Farm and the "teacher" would pause for animal names. "Old MacDonald had a farm. E I E I O. And on that farm he had a ----" Kids would just shout out animal names. So the third or so pause, Signa yells, "CATEPILAR!"

We went swimming and she wore her floating suit and after getting over the glee of "I'M SWIMMING BY MYSELF!" Signa yelled, "Look at me! I swim like David Hasslehoff!" (a la SpongeBob movie)

We've been doing nursery rhymes/old stories lately and the current fascination is the Three Little Pigs. So when I saw the Three Little Pigs MegaBlok set at Target, I just got it. I figured we'd re-enact the story, right? Nope. They have to all say Hi to each other and then the Big Bad Wolf has to apologize for "blow your house down." He says, "I sorry I blow your house down. I'm not bad any more." Then all the pigs say, "That's okay" and give him a hug and kiss.

At Mom's house, we were playing with water guns in the backyard with Mom and Auntie Leslie. Mom squirted Signa and Auntie Leslie said, "Oh, you better get her back!" Signa looked puzzled but walked around Mom and pushed her forward to shoot water at "her back". We all laughed once we figured out she didn't understand the concept of retribution.

I want to write about Jones, our kitty, but I don't know much yet. He is in the hospital with liver problems. I know he is eating now and his fever is down, so it SOUNDS like he might be getting better, but I think we are all too scared to get hopeful. So more on that later, when I have better details.

I'm going to try to be better about jotting stuff down daily. Sorry, Signa. This year's journal is going to be slim-pickin's...

Things that made me laugh..

I've not had any time for writing lately. I hope to catch up to tell about our vacation soon, but in the meantime, things that made me laugh:

* Signa sings the song, Where's Your Head At, and then says, "There it is!" while clutching the top of her head. Song is a techno kind of song from the Tomb Raider movie.

* I love hearing her say, "I have something to show you." It's so cute.

* She watches Jones nonstop and mauls him. She yells at Jack. No. No, not "yell". SCREAMS.

* I was watching some show with a "little person", Verne something-or-other who played Mini-Me in something-or-other. This was while Signa was falling asleep. She woke up and saw him and sat up in bed. "Hey! That baby's talking!" While it did, indeed, crack me up, I also know that it's not politically correct, so we had a talk about differences in people. But it still made me laugh.

* Swimming is over. Thank God. That was very difficult

* We went out to breakfast with Grampa in Oregon and I told Signa to "tell the lady what you want." She ordered French toast and the waitress walked away. Signa got all bent out of shape ("where'd da lady go? I want Frenchie toast!") So I told her the lady had to go make it. Soon the waitress came back around to refill our coffees and Signa let her have it! "You 'posed to be makin' my Frenchie toast!"

* And for Father's Day, we also went out to breakfast. Signa started doing this weird thing in her chair and I said, "What are you doing?" but in a rhetorical annoyance kind of way. She answered, loudly, "I'm scratchin' my butt!"

Okay. That's all I have time for today and that was my first line of notes I could make out as a reminder. The narration of our vacation will come soon.
